How can i kill ivy thats invading my garden?

I’m so sorry, but Ivy is evil in the garden. The only way to completly eliminate it is to dig it out. The problem is ivy has a root system that can be up to 6′ underground, even in heavy clay soil. It also spreads runners everywhere. You can control it without having to dig up your whole yard by weekly pulling out. If you go along and pull out every piece at least once a week it will keep it from spreading above ground, but not underground. The ivy killers in the stores do not work. It doesn’t take much of the nutrients out of the soil, so plants can survive nicely by keeping it under control. 5 years ago we moved into our house and the whole front yard was ivy infested with rats and old beer bottles (nasty and disgusting, how can anyone have a yard like that). After 2 years of rototilling and digging the ivy was gone. We still get runners from our neighbors yard, but I get out there every week and pull them out. The rest of our yard is beautiful and ivy free.
