You could try diluting your original sample. Thats what we do in the lab when trying to identify pathogens from amongst normal flora from sputum samples.

A. Because Haemophilus influenzae colonies are slow growing and small, they are often missed on a Chocolate plate when there is heavy growth of normal flora. Our Chocolate Agar with Bacitracin plate (Cat. no. E11) will inhibit most normal flora (S. viridans, Neisseria, staph, and diphtheroids) and allow the Haemophilus to grow without competition from other colonies for nutrients.
