How can I prevent or reduce soot when burning candles?
Soot occurs when there is an enlarged flame and ineffective, uneven burning of the candle’s wax as a result from lack of oxygen. Enlarged flames also cause increased sooting in the candle container and around it. Oversized flames are usually a result of either oversized wicks or wind that blows the flame sideways causing it to use up too much “fuel” from the sides of the candle and become larger than necessary. To ensure an even burn and reduce soot in the candle’s glass container and around the burning area, follow these three simple guidelines: 1) Always trim the wick before burning, and ensure it is centered.
