Use of an under-counter thermostatic mixing valve (“TMV”) is the best alternative to prevent scalding. At installation, the TMV is preset for a uniform temperature which is regulated by a wax element. Some local codes now require a TMV in specific conditions. Please check your local codes to see if a TMV is required. TMV can be used like a standard under counter mixer to deliver a preset temperature of water or it may be used with an above-counter mixer. By regulating the maximum temperature of water allowed into the above-counter mixing valve via a TMV, user convenience is maximized and scalding is prevented.
