How can I scare my trick-or-treaters?
Try building a haunted house in your front yard! If you don’t have those resources, having you or your significant other distract the children with candy while the other one pops out of the bushes is a good alternative.
Here’s how to make a haunted house in the walkway of your front yard:
- Add scary memorabilia that is easy to hide behind and can move when prompted to startle your trick-or-treaters.
- Make the walkway as dark as possible. You can do this by draping black fabric or felt (which is inexpensive and easily found at the craft store) over the walkway.
- Try to confuse your trick-or-treaters. One of the scariest trick-or-treating experiences I remember from my childhood was when there was this man (or woman, you couldn’t see the person’s face or any part of their body) sitting on a bench in the front yard slowly handing out candy to children without saying a word. It still gives me chills.
- Put on a stereo in your front yard. This music can be used to set the mood and raise the intensity (like in a movie).
