How can I thank my volunteers and recognise their hard work?
On a very simple level, you can thank your volunteers in person at the end of each of their volunteering sessions, or by phone or email. As an indirect form of thanks, most volunteers will appreciate receiving feedback about how their volunteering has made a difference to your organisation and client group. This is particularly important for volunteers who do not regularly meet clients (for example, some administration volunteers) and may not see the effects of their hard work first-hand. Small or home-made gifts can be an excellent way of thanking your volunteers. You could also consider giving volunteers badges or t-shirts from your organisation, or you could give certificates, cards or group photos, for example. Volunteers’ Week (1st-7th June each year) exists to celebrate as well as promote volunteering. Many organisations use this as a focal point to thank their volunteers, by having a meal or a party.
