Always try to avoid the obvious when you are writing fiction. Or if you do use cliches, try to subvert them in some way to keep the reader interested. Try playing around with the themes as this will help to give you ideas. What things could people be obsessed about? What types of love are there? The obsession doesn’t have to be about a particular person, and love doesn’t have to mean romantic love. For example, you could do a story about someone with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and how this is ruining their life. The OCD-sufferer could have a number of compulsions, e.g. a fear of stepping on cracks on the pavement, and is convinced that if they do not perform all of these rituals correctly, something awful will happen to their loved ones.
