How can phylogenetic analysis help track the global spread of a disease?

(Maryanne’s answer) Phylogenetic analysis can help better understand how a disease has been spread which may help further spread. Also if we can find out how this disease developed in humans (by tracking ancestry) it may be possible to prevent future zoonotic diseases from entering into the human population.
