California State laws permit Calexico Unified School District to accept students who live in Mexico. The California State laws require that students who reside in Mexico pay tuition equal to the total cost of educating the person (E.C. 48051 and E.C. 48052). In 2003-04 tuition cost per student is: K-12 approximately $4800. We accept payments on a quarterly or monthly basis. We are not allowed to give discounts and we do not have scholarships. My son/daughter is an American citizen. Citizenship is not a factor in determining whether or not a child has the right to a free and public school education in Calexico Unified School District. Only legal residency matters. But I know some students living in Mexicali who attend Calexico schools and don’t pay tuition! Any student who resides in Mexicali and attends our schools without paying tuition is attending illegally. Every week we identify one or more such students and remove them from our schools.
