How can town planers help prevent crime through environmental designing (CPTED)?
“designing out crime” is a major consideration in any planning development. You only have to look at the monolithic developments of the 60s and 70s to see that it wasn’t considered then. Planners design out crime by avoiding the creation of security “blind-spots” and areas of general low visibility ie. underground passages as they create the opportunity for petty crime and squatting, in addition some new measures have been utilised on some important building to design out terrorism, ie. anti ram-raid bollards (to prevent bomb trucks from ramming them, I assume. Also, by engaging the public in deprived areas, the community can become empowered to speak their mind about crime in their area, allowing for targeted police resources and diversions for problem youngsters who may otherwise turn to crime.
