You have to learn whether a word is masculine or feminine at the same time as you learn the word; when you have been speaking French for a few years you start to get a feel for which words are masculine and which are feminine – but there are no rules as such. The first answerer’s advice – that many words which end in “e” are feminine – is very risky; there are many masculine words that end in “e” and many feminine words that end in letters other than “e”.
