How Can U.S. Foreign Policy Address Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Growing Energy Needs?
Nuclear Proliferation. Given that both signatories and non-signatories of the NPT continue to produce nuclear weapons, now more than ever, it is evident that the non-proliferation regime needs a significant change in order to address the security threats of today. The U.S., working with other members of the permanent five, should recognize the need for reform within the non-proliferation regime and lead a global dialogue on disarmament and how best to undertake a reform that will have the support of all countries. International institutions, like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), monitor nuclear facilities and detect illegal nuclear weapons programs. The U.S. should support measures for stronger IAEA safeguards and thorough inspections. It should be a shining example of a responsible partner by working together with other countries and international organizations to prevent the world’s most dangerous weapons from getting into the hands of terrorists.
