How can we build high-performing teams from an internationally diverse workforce?
Many companies, even those without international offices, face difficulties in building effective teams from members who comprise many nationalities. The leader of such a team can get some of the flavor of an international assignment without ever leaving his or her home country. Without coaching, there are plentiful opportunities for breakdowns, arguments, and poor performance in such team environments. With coaching, teams with diverse membership will greatly outperform most homogenous teams. The Global Effectiveness Group works with this situation by addressing the cultural perpective through which each of us sees the world. As team members become aware of the basic assumptions they make about how others behave (based on their own culturally-ingrained expectations of how people “should” behave), barriers come down. As the barriers come down, the team members learn to solicit and build on each other’s diverse viewpoints.
