How can you tell if a baby will produce a good Suri fleece?
Before you look Alpaca and criafurther, always be sure the Alpaca exhibits good conformation. Then check to see that the locks start close to the skin and fall close to the body in straight lines. There are different types of locks but the lock structure and handle should be consistent throughout the fleece. Density is also important. A good Suri will have about 180-200 locks in a 10 square centimeter area. As with all Alpacas, ‘hand’ or feel of the fiber is always important. Many people also consider micron count but others rely exclusively on ‘hand’. For those who don’t have enough experience to determine ‘hand’, microns provide a safe objective measurement.
