How come I can see a small speck out of the corner of my eye, but can not see my own face clearly in the mirror?
In AMD, the central visual cells in the eye are affected. These are the cells that give detailed vision when looking directly at something. The cells involved in peripheral vision are not affected by AMD and thereby allow you to see peripheral objects more clearly. Unfortunately these peripheral cells do not have the same ability to resolve extreme detail, so they do not allow us to read, for example.
