I was lucky enough to have communication training, but I know this is not standard at all vet schools yet. You can have all the technical knowledge in the world, but if you don’t know how to talk to people, they will never know what a great vet you are! New grads also need the skills to deal with difficult clients and situations — my first day on the job I had to do a very difficult euthanasia, and if I hadn’t had formal training on dealing with grief, it would have been a disaster. I think the profession could help new grads by providing everyone with communication training. Do you have any free time, and if so, how do you spend it? Most of my free time is either spent gardening, or taking care of our ever-expanding family of animals. We have started a small flock of laying hens.
