A force meter (spring balance). Pull the object on a flat surface using the force meter, slowly. Divide the maximum force before the object moves by the objects weight, to get the static coefficient of friction. The dynamic coefficient of friction is the average force needed to keep the object moving at a constant speed divided by the weight of the object.  more
