How did America imperialize Hawaii?
Well, it all started off in the plantation days in the late 1800s. The United States recognized Hawaii as its own nation and had sugar tariffs imposed on the sugar that was being imported from the island to the mainland US. The rich plantation owners (most of whom were of missionary descendants from the US) realized that this was cutting their profit and decided that the only way to fix this is for Hawaii to become part of the US. So they begun to conspire against the government. Eventually, these people after overthrew the Kingdom of Hawaii. During the overthrow, they had a US battleship and soldiers/marines around the island and used to “protect” them. After the overthrow, the Republic of Hawaii was made with one of the conspirators as the their president. Queen Lili’uokalani asked President McKinely to reinstate the Kingdom of Hawaii, but instead he annexed the Republic of Hawaii and made it into a US territory.
