How did Angel Island get its name?

In August 1775, Spanish Naval Lieutenant Juan Manuel de Ayala sailed his ship into San Francisco Bay on a mission to develop an accurate description of the bay for other Spanish ship captains. He named the island “Isla de Los Angeles” (Spanish for “Island of the Angels”), after the Catholic feast day of Our Lady of the Angels, which coincided with his arrival.
