How did different breeds of dogs evolve?
People of Asia and Egypt were the first to begin to select dogs for a specific type more than 3,000 years ago. Evidence of breed development can be seen in artwork and carvings preserved from this period. Originally, people selected for certain characteristics in their dogs based on use; Coursing dogs (Saluki, Greyhound) Guard dogs (mastiffs) Hounds (Ibizan, Pharaoh) were among the first breeds developed. Through the Middle Ages there were only about a dozen or so types of dogs, each type was bred to perform a specific task. The explosion of actual breed development occurs during the Industrial Revolution. Eighteenth century “best dog” competitions in local pubs developed into nineteenth century dog shows with set breed standards and registration of dogs within kennel clubs. In recent times, appearance rather than performance has been the main thrust of breed selection. This emphasis on looks has lead to an increased incidence in purebred dogs of diseases that are genetic in origin. Ho
