Mrs. Madison did not “change the country.” During her tenure as First Lady, she was regarded as rather glamorous, and this definitely affected the public as far as expectations of First Ladies were concerned; and she did help rescue a number of items from the White House during the War of 1812. However, she had no great effect on the country at large. First Ladies didn’t at that stage, in that era.
