How did geography of the foreign countries affect the soldiers of World War 1?

One way in which the geography affected soldiers was with the conflict between Germany and Russia. Germany was being attacked on two fronts and decided to attack France first thinking that Russia’s terrain would cause the army to be slow forming and slow moving. Unfortunately, the German’s were wrong and Russia won many small battles along the border of Austria and Germany. Also, the terrain of the Alpine Mountain system helped to keep Switzerland neutral during WW1.
