HOW DID HAWAII GET ITS NAME?
Some people say Hawaii comes from the combination of ‘Hawa’ and ‘ii’ and means a small/new homeland. ‘Hawa’ means traditional homeland and ‘ii’ means small and raging. Some people also have theorized that the name came from the person who according to tradition, discovered the islands – Hawaii Loa. Many people are beginning to name their children ‘Hawaii’ after the island. It is popular on many baby name lists online and in books.
