the figures you speak of during the time was to suggest and illustrate the idea of the seperation of humans from God and Angels and demons as well as what the church wanted their congregations to feel, the 3 dimenstional artwork was very intemidating and suggestive that there is a division between Good and Evil……All of this was the catholic pope’s ( all of them over time) Now in 2 dimensional things, alot of writing known as caligraphitic Priories ( the first letter being much larger than the follwing text which served to divide one book or one chapter from another,…..this was a time when the Pope could have his every whim attended, architecture, writing and streets, housing and markets where the Vatican could have their needs met in very little time……By the way, the artwork that Michael Angelo did is alot smaller that it looks in person. Now as Humanism goes, human beings at the time were looked at by the church as MONEY and there was’nt much humanism per’se during the time.
