How did Imperialism affect todays World?
Imperialism is defined as exploiting other nations and people for the benefit of an Imperial power through military occupation and colonial rule or indirectly through economic domination of resources and markets. I would go further and say that Imperialism can also be the political domination of another nation’s government by an Imperial power. This final brand of imperialism can be easily found in the actions of the U.S.S.R. and the United States during the cold war and in the actions of multinational corporations today. Since 1978 the United States has used its military in an imperialistic fashion ninety-one times, forty-two of which occurred between 1865 and 1917, mostly in South America, the Caribbean, and Eastern Asia. The most famous instance of U.S. imperialism occurred after the Spanish-American War in 1898, in which the United States took possession of Hawaii, the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, and Cuba.
