How did Lincoln Nebraska get its name?
According to the Nebraska ETV documentary “Frontier University Dreams,” the territorial government insisted that if the capitol moved from the territorial capitol of Omaha the new location should change its name to Lincoln in honor of the president. This was actually a ploy by the Omaha faction because the head of the faction championing their chief rival, the town of Lancaster, was a well known Southern sympathizer. Instead of balking at the suggestion, he was the first to second it and the capitol was moved to Lancaster, with the name change.
