How did Old World monkeys come to have more sophisticated colour vision than New World species?

One theory is that the Old World monkeys use their sophisticated colour vision to help determine whether fruit is ripe and thus ready to eat. I’ve never really been sure why this would be different for Old World monkeys compared with New World, since there’s certainly plenty of fruit in South America that needs to ripen too.
