The process was gradual but the decisive factor was a decree by the Roman emperor at the time, Constantine, who declared that Rome would henceforth be Christian. He had had a vision before going into a battle that if he displayed the Christian cross on his banners & flag, he would win the battle. Constantine did as the dream suggested, won the battle, & then decided that his empire ought from that time forward be Christian.
