Slaves in Africa were won in a war between tribes, as were slaves throughout the world in most conflicts throughout history. As with Greek slaves or Chinese slaves, there was no question that they were in a subserviant position now that they were captured and made slaves, but their humanity was not in question. They simply were people unlucky enough to lose the war! And they were sometimes far from home, but usually among people where the culture was close enough to their own where there would have been much more common ground with language and customs. And there was always the possibility that the slave’s tribe would win the next conflict and they could return home, taking their captors as slaves. None of these things were true with the concept of slavery in relation to the Americas. First they were brought so far away from their home and put into a culture that was completely foreign in tongue and in customs.
