Slaves in Africa were won in a war between tribes, as were slaves throughout the world in most conflicts throughout history. As with Greek slaves or Chinese slaves, there was no question that they were in a subserviant position now that they were captured and made slaves, but their humanity was not in question. They simply were people unlucky enough to lose the war! And they were sometimes far from home, but usually among people where the culture was close enough to their own where there would have been much more common ground with language and customs.
