There are several methodological differences between TABS and these other major national studies. For example, while TABS was a continuous telephone survey, MTF and YRBS are both point in time, school-based surveys and NSDUH is an in-home survey. Despite (or perhaps because of) these differences in study methodology and survey composition, in many ways these surveys can be viewed as complementary. Also, while the specific questions asked of youth for each of these surveys differ, many of the topics that were explored through TABS are also explored through one or more of these other national studies.
