OK, in order of occurrence, this is the way it broke out: The Industrial Revolution created a vast manufacturing base which would begin to tap the resources in Western Europe pretty quickly and by the early 1800’s, the iron and coal fields were beginning to see some depletion. Nationalism grew as countries competed with each other for markets for their goods, such as England did with France over the US market. Machine parts were the primary market that Americans could not provide for themselves and England wanted to control all of the US market. It simply grew worse as the 19th century progressed. The Germans entered the race late in the century (after 1869) and this made for a competition that included everyone by the turn of the 20th century. Italy, Scandinavia, Belgium, the Low Countries, even Russia and Poland and finally the US were all in competition for trade.
