How did the museum get the objects in its collections?
Approximately 53% of the objects in the museum collections – including its most celebrated objects – were donated by Avery Brundage in the 1960s, serving as the impetus for the museum’s founding. Other significant donations include the recent acquisitions of the Lloyd Cotsen Japanese Bamboo Basket Collection (832 objects), the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s Southeast Asian Art Collection (167 objects) and fine Korean paintings donated by the Koret Foundation, the museum’s Korean Art and Culture Committee, the museum’s Connoisseur Council and individual donors. Because of limited acquisition funds, the museum relies on the generosity of donors – individuals, corporations and foundations. Click here to return to top.
