How did the smuggling courts created by the Sugar Act differ from the regular courts?
The smuggling courts were ad hoc and dealt specifically with these issues rather than the generic courts which dealt with the whole range. They had a reputation for being less fair than the normal courts and having a more harsh punishment scheme so it was best not to be called before the smuggling court that’s for sure!
