In the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was required to pay back in full the entire cost of WWI. So Germany decided to barrow the money from the United States in order to cover the cost. Germany took the money from the United States and gave it to Britain and France to cover the cost of the war. Britain and France turned around and used that same money to pay back the United States for helping them in the war. Then the money was loaned back to Germany. The cycle continued through the Twenties until Germany could no longer pay the interest on the loans, this forced them to default on the loans. As it turned out, a vast majority of the money in our economy at the time was created by the loans to Germany, and it vanished overnight. This was the root of the problem that caused the Depression.
