A body of research conducted in the 1980s and 1990s seemed to show benefit from vitamin and mineral supplements in preventing chronic diseases like cancer and osteoporosis and heart disease. But reviews of these studies showed that much of the benefit attributed to supplements was actually attributable to the overall better health practices of those who took them. In other words, people who took vitamin supplements also tended to eat better, smoke less, and get more exercise, says Rosenberg. Many people have started taking supplements containing antioxidants because of research gathered over the past three decades showing these compounds help slow cell damage.
