How did West Michigan hospitals fare in a USA Today survey?
USA Today has posted the results of a hospital survey that ranked facilities in terms of deaths and readmissions for heart attacks, heart failure and pneumonia. The results are based on data collected from more than 5,000 hospitals between 2005 and 2008. You can find nationwide results by tinkering with USA Today’s interactive map here. Notable results from the area: • Spectrum Health-Butterworth Campus was lower than the national average for heart attack deaths, but didn’t make the bottom 100. (The closest facility to do so was Pennock Hospital in Hastings, with a heart-attack death rate of 12.7 percent. • Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mount Pleasant ranked in the highest 100 for heart attack deaths at 21.8 percent. • Spectrum Health-Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids made the lowest 100 for heart attack readmissions, with 17.5 percent
