How Do ASCs Fare?

The ASC Association and the ASC Advocacy Committee made strong efforts to raise awareness of the ways ASCs could assist the nation in its goals of expanding access and controlling costs. We held numerous meetings with the White House, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and members of Congress. In those meetings and in other communications with government officials, we made suggestions similar to those I made in the April 2009 issue of OR Today in a column titled “President Obama – ASCs Are the Answer.” Specifically, in response to President Obama’s claim in his first State of the Union Address that his Administration was going through the federal budget “line by line…in order to eliminate wasteful and ineffective programs,” I suggested that “one way to reduce federal expenditures is to use ASCs to the greatest extent possible in all federal healthcare programs.” I poin
