How do car designers build clay models of cars with such precise tollerances ?
In the older days it was a painstaking and methodical process using measuring equipment – even tape measures and micrometers and steel rulers Now – the models are measured using laser technology and painstaking precision by the craftsmen to shave off – just the right amount in the right place. Most of the craftesmen also, as you so rightly say, have the eye for symmetry and can spot a flaw from a mile away….it just takes years of practice – and a few mess ups…. One of the guys I used to work with could – just by eye, lay out coachlines on the paintwork of the planes – and they would be less than 2mm off over the whole length of the plane. And, that was using paint – not stick on coachlines – by hand!!
