How Do Choke Tubes Work in Shotguns?
Inserting the Choke Tube A choke tube is inserted into the barrel of a shotgun by means of threads. Both the shotgun barrel and the choke tube feature threads cut into the metal. These threads may be either universal or specific to a particular type of shotgun. It is important to make sure the correct choke tube is used for the right gauge shotgun. The tube is first threaded by hand into the barrel of the shotgun, then seated with the use of a choke wrench. How Choke Tubes Work Choke tubes are designed to alter the dispersal pattern of the shot as it leaves the barrel of the shotgun. Depending on the type of choke, such as full or modified, the resulting pattern of shot will either be wider or more compact down range. For example, a full choke will produce a tight and more concentric grouping of shot at a target down range than that of a modified choke. The basic choke designations are, from least constricting, the cylinder, modified and full. However, there are also skeet, improved cy
