How do disc herniation cause back or leg pain?

When the disc bulges or herniates into the spinal canal, it irritates the nerves in that area, causing both back pain and leg pain in the area where that nerve carries impulses. The muscles surrounding the injured disc will become tight (muscle spasm) and restrict the spinal movement.
