Preparing the LayerLook in your Layers palette to ensure that the item to which you want to add a stroke exists on its own layer. Access the Layers palette by pressing F7. If other items populate that layer, use the Lasso tool to select the item you wish to stroke, and press Cntl+X to cut it out of the layer. Then create a new layer by pressing Shift+Cntl+N and paste the item on the blank layer by pressing Ctrl+V. If you decide to add a simple border to a photo that you opened as a JPEG or GIF file, the Layers palette will show only “Background.” Double-click on the background and press “OK” in the resulting dialog box to make the background a layer.Applying the StrokeDouble-click on the layer you wish to stroke and the Layer Styles dialog box opens.
