Drill a Mounting HolePlace the tip of a 1/2-inch drill bit on the bottom face of the stair rail. Tilt the drill bit 30 degrees from the newel post. Drill a 1/2-inch pilot hole through the bottom of the stair rail and 3 inches into the newel post. Drill a 1-inch-deep, 5/8-inch-diameter hole into the bottom face of the stair rail.Install a FastenerTurn the #14 lag screw clockwise with a wrench until the connection between the stair rail and newel post pulls tight. Over tightening the lag screw will either result in a stripped pilot hole to a cracked newel post.Hide the Fastener LocationTap a 5/8-inch flush plug into the hole drilled into the bottom face of the stair rail with a wooden or rubber mallet.
