Job growth is predicted to be slight and job turnover, which provides the majority of job opportunities, remains low. To become a qualified locksmith, you must complete a locksmith apprenticeship. The off the job training associated with the apprenticeship is available through TAFE. Apprentices and trainees are contracted to an employer for the time it takes to gain skills in a trade or vocational area – usually between 1 and 4 years.
There are two ways to become a locksmith: apprenticeship or certification from the Associated Locksmiths Of America (ALOA). The most common method is to attend trade school. Licensing requirements for locksmiths vary widely between the different states, with some requiring the successful completion of a licensing exam and others simply requiring the payment of a licensing fee to become a locksmith. To obtain an apprenticeship, you should first complete a course in basic locksmithing. These 10 to 12 week courses are available from a wide range of schools and cover the basic information necessary to get started. you can start by finding a locksmith.then tell him that your very interested in what he does.ask him would he be interested in taking you on as an apprentice this may involve working for little money but who cares you’ll be learning a trade for life.if he says no tell him that you will work for free maybe for an hour or two each day just for the experience.if he still isn’t interested find another locksmith and repeat the process until you find another one who is interested.in the mean time start researching and cataloging every kind of lock there is by name and type,old ones, new ones and how they work this would certainly impress the hell out of any locksmith ! how could he turn you down you have the dream now lock on target..best of luck..
Because I very much doubt the state is going to consider Penn Foster legitimate locksmith training. I’ve searched around and found one place in New Jersey which is certified by the ALOA for training, however it’s nowhere near where I live, which is why I had decided to go with a distance locksmith learning program to begin with. If locksmiths of New Jersey could please help regarding my questions, I’d very much appreciate it. I’d really like to receive locksmith training, and start my own business, however now I’m just not sure what to do, or how to go about doing it.
My daughter wanted to do the same thing so we went into a locksmiths and she said flat out that she wanted to become a locksmith and wanted to know how to go about that. The conversation ended with her working and training with and for them. If you do the same you’ll probably get the same results. Be prepared to try a few of them though as the first one might not grab the opportunity.
