How do I buy a handgun in Maryland?
1. You go to your local gun shop and figure out which gun you want to buy. 2. Once you’ve decided, you pay the dealer and fill out the paperwork. The dealer will give you both state and federal papers to fill out to complete a background check. FYI, the Federal background check is very quick and takes about 5 minutes. 3. During this time, they’ll show you a quick safety video that lasts about 20 minutes right there in the store. Afterwards, you get a little card saying you completed the course. HOLD ONTO THIS CARD! If you buy another handgun, you’ll need that card or you’ll have to watch the safety vid again. 4. Pay your money, go home empty handed and wait for a week. During this time, Maryland State Police conducts a more thorough background check on you including juvenille records (YES, they do).
