Fig trees are a member of the Ficus genus and part of the mulberry family. They prefer subtropical climates with warm summers and mild winters. Since figs have a very short shelf life, it is often difficult get fresh figs, particularly in the northern United States. Many people plant and cultivate their own fig trees, although it takes a bit more work in the colder regions. The North American Fruit Explorers suggests planting Celeste, English Brown Turkey, Alma and Hardy Chicago fig tree varieties, since they are hardier.
