How do I convert MPG to MP4 on a Mac?

Open the MPG file with QuickTime X. If QuickTime cannot play the particular MPG file, you may need to install the free Perian system preference pane that allows QuickTime to play additional codec formats. Select “Share” from the menu bar in QuickTime X and select “iTunes…” You will presented with three different options for the iPod, AppleTV or Computer. The different options represent different resolutions, sizes and compatibility. Select the desired output format and click “Share.” QuickTime will begin converting the video. When the conversion completes, the video will be copied to your iTunes library. Locate the video within the “Movies” pane of iTunes, right-click the video and select “Show in Finder.” Double-click the file name to edit the name. Delete the extension and replace it with “.mp4”–QuickTime converts the video into the H.264/MPEG-4 format, but may use a different extension (such as M4V).
