How do I find out about fellowships and writers colony residencies and writers conferences?
Again, like contests, fellowships, etc., are often listed in literary magazines and in writing-related magazines. Again, you want to make sure you know exactly what is involved (stipends, length of time, location, room and board arrangements, etc.) before you apply. There are a number of places that advertise “residencies” for writers, but are run by private individuals looking to make a quick buck off a cabin in the woods somewhere. Beware of anything that sounds too good. Reputable fellowships and residencies will be immediately obvious and even have web sites you can look up. I would also caution you against jumping into conferences that combine water skiing and mountain climbing with writing, especially those that command hefty prices. Likewise, conferences aboard cruise ships, on the tops of volcanos, in Italian villas, or in “exotic locations” may often be more about going off to a cool place than actually writing, especially those that last only a week.
