Choose a variety that is tall, as some will grow to 14′ or so, others are dwarfer. You can start your seed indoors, a little earlier than weather would permit outdoors, keeping it potted, until ready to plant out. Prepare the growing area well, digging deeply and incorporate lots of organic matter, such as well rotted manure or compost. This will release nutrients for your plants, as well as retain moisture during hot weather. Choose a site that’s really sunny, potentially with some wind break nearby too. Stake your plants, as they can be knocked over by wind, as they grow taller. Watch out for predators, such as slugs, snails or aphids, which will eat and weaken your plant. Feed them every week or so, or use a slow-release fertiliser, as well as ensuring that they get enough water, as drought will slow their growth down.
