How do I harvest the Worm castings and the Worm Leachate?
Leachate will begin to be produces after 2 weeks. This will supply you a constant supply of liqid fertilser to dilute with water at a ratio of 1:10 to 1:25. Always use as freshly as possiblt, and only apply only in the evenings. Please remember that the leachate is merely a useful by-product with trace amounts of nutrients and small numbers of CFUs (Colony Forming Units) of a variety of beneficial soil micro-organisms. The REAL gold is in the vermicast. Don’t be “conned” by layers and taps that are designed soley for leachate collection. Too many layers or too large a volume will result in “overworked” castings, because by the time you come to harvest the vermicast, it will have a fine, silty texture, and be way past its prime. The best time to harvest is when food is no longer recognisable, and the castings have a course, crumbly texture. A fun way to harvest castings is to remove top portion of “unworked” food and set aside in the shade. Empty out the rest onto a sheet of plastic or
