How Do I Hike Lost Mine Trail In Texas?

0

One of the most popular half-day hikes at Big Bend is Lost Mine Trail. The trail requires less climbing and is shorter than South Rim Trail, but it still provides hikers with spectacular views. According to the old Spanish legend, at certain times of the year the sun shines on the entrance of a rich Spanish mine. Drive west from Panther Junction at Big Bend National Park headquarters toward Alpine for about 3 miles. Turn left onto a marked paved road to the Basin and find the large parking lot at the top of the pass. Follow the trail as it climbs steeply on a paved surface. Around 100 feet the pavement ends. Continue the gradual climb to a saddle between Juniper Canyon and Green Gulch. Continue as the climb begins a series of switchbacks along a steep grade. At the 2-mile point the trail reaches a ridge and follows it to a rocky promontory. From here are surrounding views of Sierra del Carmen and the Chisos Mountains. Consider carrying a good flashlight so you can watch the sunset over
